You have the Right to be Issued with an Employment Contract

When employing a Household Worker:

  • Engage and agree on hours of work, days of rest, maternity leave, and annual leave etc.
  • Terms should be fair and consistent with the labour laws of Jamaica concerning employment, workers compensation, occupational safety and health and social security.
  • Issue the Household Worker with a contract signed by both parties with witnesses. (see Contract Templates in the 'Tools and Contracts' section)

You have the Right to Respect and Equal Treatment

  • Household Workers should be treated like any other employee/worker
  • Household Worker should be treated with respect
  • Treat a Household Worker as one of the managers of the home. 
  • Sanction a Household Worker to correcting conduct and improve performance (do not abuse/mistreat). 

You have the Right to a Fair Hearing

  • A Household Worker has a right to a fair hearing in case of wrongdoing at work.
  • Conduct a hearing for a Household Worker before a disciplinary action is taken against her/him at the place of work/home.
  • A Household Worker has a right to representation by the Union.

You have the Right to Representation

Where the employer has violated the rights of a Household Worker, the worker has a right to report the case to the Jamaica Household Workers Union (free of charge) by calling or visiting our offices.


As a Union, the JHWU stands ready to listen and assess situations reported by members of the Household Workers Union. Based on our assessment, we will advise which rights have been violated and determine whether a grievance exists. 


Possible Kinds of Grievance 

  • Unsafe or unhealthy working conditions
  • Abuse of authority 
  • Intimidation or coercion
  • Discrimination
